Joutsenet -monologue (Eng. Swans)

by Sanna Salán & Valtteri Rossi, Taidekollektiivi Perinnöttömät

“Sometimes I know that I wasn’t always alone. I can remember how it feels to be full up to the brim with excitement!”.

Joutsenet tells the story of a young woman in the aching intersection of her youth and adulthood. It is a story of an isolating moment that seems to insulate her from the world. The monologue transpires the audience from the constraints of a city apartment to dreamy images of childhood, in which nature and one special person play a big part. Joutsenet is a trip to time where everything has stopped, daily routines vanished and pain snuggles in the couch corner.

But on the other hand it asks questions about life and the meaning of everything: where to next?

This monologue was created for a monologue collage in the deep depths of the covid-19 pandemic, and thus reflects on themes of community, belonging, loneliness and the meaning of life. This collage was originally created with four pieces, performed in Helsinki in 2021 and was self-produced by the company.

In 2023 this piece was chosen to be part of the National Monologue Competition in Oulu, Finland.
